Shocking Statistics
Shoctober.
Shoctober is a defibrillator awareness campaign we developed for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS). The campaign seeks to provide essential information about a variety of issues that prevent defibrillators from being emergency ready – and therefore useless.
Stylografik worked closely with the NIAS to develop advertising, infographics and information documents outlining important information a defibrillator guardian should be aware of.
This campaign resonated with me personally as my father suffered a cardiac arrest in 2021 – if not for a defibrillator and the amazing work of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service he would no longer be with us. Thankfully, he is.
Defibrillators can be seen in a variety of places these days; from Marks & Spencer to the local football club. They are vital in helping someone with the onset of sudden cardiac issues. Whilst working on this campaign – with Stephanie Leckey from NIAS – I discovered just how big a problem there is in maintaining defibrillators. Many individuals are kind enough to donate defibrillators to their local sports team, social club or business; but what became apparent during the brand design process, is that many defibrillators are either not registered (at www.thecircuit.uk) or aren’t maintained on a regular basis.
Some interesting facts I discovered about defibrillators during the design process:
There are over 1000 defibrillators not registered – and therefore not visible to the emergency services – within Northern Ireland
After being called into action, a defibrillator needs to be checked to ensure it is emergency ready
Some defibrillators are inside a building, rendering them useless if the building closes at a certain time
Every defibrillator needs to be registered at www.thecircuit.uk – this ensures the emergency services can see them on a map in the event of an emergency.
Hopefully the Shoctober campaign helps spread awareness about the importance of registering and maintaining a defibrillator. If you are interested and want to find out more, download the full campaign document at the button below – it could help save someones life.
